The month of August brings the birthstone of Peridot. Also know as Olivine is a yellow-green gemstone and is the birthstone for the month of August. Most of the worlds Peridot is mined in Arizona but larger, higher quality ones are mined in Pakistan & Myanmar. Olivine crystals are found in metamorphic rocks such as basalt. It can be raining Peridot in a volcanic eruption and gets it’s color from iron. On the Mohs scale of hardness Peridot is only a 6.5 to 7.0., with diamond being the hardest at 10. The Ancients believed Peridot was a gift of Mother Nature to celebrate the annual creation of a new world. Leaders who wore it were thought to be gentle, fair & wise. Preferably it should be worn as earrings or a pendant.
